WAY OF FAITH

When the Apostle John opened the Gospel which bears his name, he began by identifying Jesus as the One True God. He used a term --Word-- which was common in his day, to describe who Jesus is. By the identifying term the Word, John points to the One Who created everything that exists in the universe (see Genesis 1:1) and the One in Whom all mankind derives its life. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it (John 1:1-5). If Jesus was a created being, and not infinite as is the case with God, then it would have been impossible for Him to create all things that have come into being, for He would be included in all things. The Creator cannot create Himself! This would be an impossibility!

    THE GLORY OF CHRIST
    by John Owen

An easier-to-read version of John Owen's Meditations on the Glory of Christ

Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory.
    John 17:24

One of the greatest consolations for the child of God is that this prayer of Jesus Christ will be answered: we will be with Christ where He is, for all eternity. But what is the Lord's purpose in wanting us with Him? According to His words, it is so that we may behold His glory. John Owen asserts that it is the great privilege of believers to behold the glory of Christ in both this world and the world to come. In Volume 1 of his Works Owen takes nearly 200 pages to expound the glory of God revealed in Christ; Christ's own glory seen in His person, work and exaltation; the believer's glory in union with Christ; and the coming glory when Christ shall restore all things. Owen's depth of thought and passion for Christ have made this discourse on The Glory of Christ one of the great masterpieces of Christian literature. For most Christians, though, this treasure has been inaccessible because of its sheer size and difficult style. Now we have a faithful abridgement and modernization in Banner of Truth's Puritan Paperback series. Though Owen's topic is profound, every reader should get the essence of his message on first reading, and the material certainly warrants re-examination and study.

Do you yearn to know more of Christ and His glory? Here is fuel for increased adoration, gratitude and spiritual fervor, as you contemplate the wisdom, grace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Excerpt? In his divine person absolutely considered, he is the essential image of God, even the Father. He is in the Father, and the Father in him, in the unity of the same divine essence, John 14: 10. Now he is with the Father, John 1: 1, in the distinction of his person, so is he his essential image, Col. 1: 15; Heb. 1: 3. In his incarnation he becomes the representative image of God unto the church, 2 Cor. 4: 6; without whom our understandings can make no such approach unto the divine excellencies but that God continues to be unto us what he is in himself, - the "visible God." In the face of Jesus Christ we see his glory.
