Dr. Phil Newton
Pastor Phil Newton began South Woods Baptist Church in 1987. He served as a pastor of three other churches prior to moving to Memphis. He received his education at the University of Mobile, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Karen, were married in 1975. They enjoy discussing biblical issues, reading, walking, traveling, and taking care of their 5 children. Their children range from married to fourth grade. Kelly, who is married to Adam Moore, is a graduate of Mississippi College. Andrew, 24, is in the U. S. Navy. John is a 22-year-old senior at UNC Chapel Hill. Elizabeth, a 16-year-old tenth-grader at Hutchison, and Stephen, a 12-year-old sixth-grader at PDS, remain at home. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Pastor Phil serves on the Executive Board of Founders Ministries (www.founders.org), as an adjunct professor at Crichton College in Memphis and Theologique de Nimes (France), and enjoys leading foreign mission trips annually. He has published articles in several journals and has authored THE WAY OF FAITH. He also regularly sends his Sunday morning message via e-mail to people in several countries.
